Saturday, July 8th was the second running of the Tour de Flagler. The 30+ mile Tour entails two of Central Florida’s premier MTB trails with a bit of road, sidewalk, multi-use trail, and dirt doubletrack connecting the two. Also in the route are two bridge climbs in the blazing sun which everyone genuinely looks forward to as the highlights of the day.
Halfway up the initial climb, (5,000’+ today) you can almost see our starting point at the ocean that’s hiding in the fog. Locals refer to this time of year as “June Gloom”, due to the heavy fog that blankets the area. Temps hover around low 50’s-65 down at the coast.
Day 3. Soquel Demonstration State Forest. Demo Forest for short. Named for a cooperation between local logging industry and public land access where sections of the forest are “thinned” (rather than cleared) in a sustainable manner while maintaining trail system for hikers, bikes & equestrians.
After considerable climbing and pondering of random detritus left out in the forest, once again we were rewarded with miles of rocky goodness at a severe downward pitch.
Yep. With the majority of the trails soaking in the darkness of dense redwood shadows, J. Normal is ’bout blinded by the harsh light on the loose, gravelrama landing chute. Leap of faith indeed.
With today promising more high velocity rock diving, I had the opportunity to ride the Ibis Mojo HD.
Day 2 began early with promises of 3k’ climbing that will be duly rewarded tenfold with repeated sustained downward velocity that can only be dreamt of back in the armpit of Florida.
Headed out of the UCSC campus directly into the aptly named Star Wars
trail did not disappoint.
